Getting ready for a headshot session can be a bit daunting, but with the right preparation, you can ensure your photos turn out fantastic. As your go-to headshots photographer in Los Angeles, I’m here to guide you through the process with some valuable tips to help you look and feel your best.
1. Natural Makeup
If you can get your makeup done by one of my professional makeup artists, that is most ideal, but if you decide to do it yourself or go with a makeup artist of your choice, please remember that for headshots, LESS IS MORE when it comes to makeup. The goal is to enhance your natural features without overpowering them. Here are some makeup tips:
Foundation & Concealer : Choose a foundation that matches your skin tone perfectly and apply it evenly. Avoid heavy contouring and heavy coverage. Go with light coverage so your natural skin texture still shows through. I will be able to retouch skin imperfections such as blemishes, and softening wrinkles in post-editing.
Powder: Translucent powder is best and don't overdo it. Bring it along to your session for touch-ups in between takes to help with shine.
Eyes: Stick to neutral eyeshadows and define your eyes with a bit of mascara and eyeliner. Avoid fake eyelashes that have a lot of length, as they can look unnatural and block out catchlights in your eyes.
Brows: Well-groomed brows can frame your face beautifully. Fill them in lightly if needed and do pluck distracting strays.
Lips: Choose a natural lip color that complements your skin tone and bring different options for lip colors as you may want to change up the look!
Remember, the camera picks up on heavy makeup, so aim for a polished yet natural look.
2. Stay Hydrated
Drinking plenty of water in the days leading up to your session can do wonders for your skin. Avoid excessive caffeine and alcohol, as these can dehydrate you. Remember that hydrated skin translates beautifully in photos.
3. Get a Good Night’s Sleep
The first step to looking your best is feeling your best. Make sure you get a full night’s sleep before your headshot session. Lack of sleep can result in dark circles under your eyes, a dull complexion, and a tired expression. Aim to wake up refreshed and ready for your close-up!
4. Hair Styling
If you can get your hair styled by one of my professional hair stylists, that is most ideal, but if you decide to do it yourself or go with a hair stylist of your choice, remember your hair should be clean, styled without heavy product, and try to reflect your everyday look. Avoid experimenting with new hairstyles or drastic cuts right before your session. If you plan to get a haircut, do it at least a week in advance to allow it to settle. Bring your hair styling product(s) and tools if you plan to change up your look, and bring a brush or comb for maintenance during your session.
5. Wardrobe Selection
Choose tops and blouses that make you feel confident and comfortable. Solid colors work best for headshots as they keep the focus on your face. Avoid busy patterns, logos, or anything that might distract from your expression and bring several options so we can choose the best looks for you during the session. Please try to steam out the wrinkes ahead of time and keep them hung when you transport them over. There is a clothing rack at the studio so you can hang them as soon as you arrive!
For Acting Headshots, bring neutral colors like white and black, but also bring jewel-toned colors. Even though we are shooting headshots, do bring a couple options for your pants as they may still show when we shoot a little wider.
6. Practice Poses and Expressions
Practicing in front of a mirror can significantly boost your confidence and help you get comfortable with different poses and expressions. Try out different angles, smiles, and emotions. When practicing emotions, try thinking of words that evoke feelings, such as feeling excited, compassionate, sincere and dreamy. Find the expressions that feel the most natural to you. Remember, a relaxed and genuine smile is always the most appealing so learn to refresh the smiles which will re-energize your feelings, versus holding a smile through several takes. When practicing, be mindful of the energy in your eyes. Too much energy can make you appear surprised, while too little can result in a lack of expression or feeling.
7. Relax and Have Fun
Finally, it’s important to relax and enjoy the experience. A headshot session should be a fun and positive experience. Trust that I’ll guide you through the process, direct you when needed, and help you with poses and expressions to capture your best self.
Looking forward to having some fun together!!!
